People are being urged to talk to relatives about organ donation with 100 days left before the law changes in Wales to a new opt-out system.

On December 1 Wales will become the first country in the UK to introduce a “soft opt-out” system for organ donation.

Under the new system if people have not registered a decision on organ donation either way they will be considered as having no objection – known as deemed consent.

Welsh Health Minister Mark Drakeford said: “We hope this will help save lives by transforming attitudes towards consent to organ donation.”

New system equals no change

But critics like Conservative MP for Monmouth David Davies have suggested the soft opt-out system has been a “complete waste of time, money and effort”.

Mr Davies maintains there is no difference in practice between the new arrangements and the ones that will take effect on December 1 because relatives will still be consulted before organs are taken. Continue reading
