CLEAR LAKE – St. Marcus Catholic Church parishioners and Central Minnesota residents gently tucked bills into a free-will offering of a pork chop dinner and lunch, with the proceeds going to help the Maurer family.
The Maurers lost two members of their family — Charles (Chuck) Maurer, 54, and Cassy Maurer, 10 — after a July 21 car collision in Becker.
Seeing a family in need, St. Marcus parishioners rallied around the family by hosting a benefit pork chop meal to help aid the needs of Charles’ children Patrick, 26, and Alenita Maurer, 15, as well as Cassy's mother Teodora Maurer. The event also included a silent auction with items donated from businesses within the community.
“The plan is for (proceeds) to help where it is needed,” Melissa Fox, St. Marcus director of faith formation and benefit organizer, said. “We talked about seeing how much is raised and setting some aside for college for Alenita.”
With a steady flow of community members all afternoon, volunteer Erich Schafer said those donating had been extremely generous.
“We even have people coming in and giving a donation and not even partaking in the meal,” Schafer said. Continue reading
