What a weekend.
Hundreds of athletes made this year British Transplant Games the biggest and best in the history of the event after an action-packed 72-hours on Tyneside.
Each with their own inspiring story, transplant recipients from across the UK gathered in Newcastle and Gateshead to take part in the annual Games which aim to highlight the continuing need for organ donation.
Over the weekend, Gateshead International Stadium hosted athletics, while golf, swimming, fishing, tennis and a host of other activities were held at venues across the region.
The Games opened with a parade through Newcastle city centre on Thursday night, while on Saturday hundreds of runners gathered on the Newcastle-Gateshead quayside for the Donor Run.
The event got underway on the same day a Chronicle campaign to boost the number of lifesavers in the region smashed its target. New figures revealed 23,063 people are now signed the NHS Organ Donor Register since we launched our Become a Donor campaign in November.
The Chronicle set a target of getting 10,000 onto the Register, but the North East public have come forward in massive numbers and agreed to become donors. Continue reading
