A FORMER transplant patient and now athlete from Grimsby has taken her lifetime British Transplant Games medals haul to more than 50 after scooping another two at this year's games.

Grimsby athlete Gemma Wardle (nee Pickett) is a veteran British Transplant Games competitor and has just returned from yet another successful transplant games, having won a gold medal in badminton and a bronze medal in table tennis at the 2015 games in Gateshead.

The games, which took place between Wednesday July 29 and Sunday August 2, marked the 31-year-old's 12th appearance at the event, from which she has claimed an incredible 56 medals.

Gemma, 31, had a kidney transplant 25 years ago when she was aged seven, ruling her out of contention to compete in both the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games, because of restrictions regarding her medication. Continue reading.
