These brave families did not let grief keep them from doing a noble deed. They donated their deceased family members' organs, so that part of their beloved kinsfolk could stay alive in others. As dna turns ten, it chronicles the tales of ten such families who took the tough decision of organ donation. The organs of a brain-dead person can been given to as many as eight people. Vital organs such as the eyes, heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, intestine, lungs and skin can be donated.
The trend of cadaver donations has always been uneven in the city. In 2012, there were 27 cadaver donations, while in 2013 there were 24 donations. In 2014, the city saw 41 cadaver donations that benefited 107 people. This year, till date, the city has witnessed 24 cadaver donations.
Any individual whose brain stem, an important part of the central nervous system, is irreparably damaged, is declared brain dead. The heart may continue to function due to ventilator support for between 36 to 72 hours.
