Thanking your donors is the right thing to do. Better yet is thanking them well. From Clairification, here are 3 Rules for Thanking Nonprofit Donors that Should Never Be Broken:

  1. Prompt. All donations should trigger an acknowledgement sent through the mail within 24 hours. If you are far from this timing, start making improvements now! Get as close to 24 hours as you can. Donors are used to speedy response.
  2. Personalized. The more personal you can make a thank-you message, the better. Talk to them about what they did! Make it warm and personal. Add a short handwritten note. It's important!
  3. Phone. Just a short thank-you message. Sent to voicemail? That's okay. Leave a message. Phone calls meaningfully improve donor retention!
