What does it take to succeed in fundraising? It starts with leadership. You're going nowhere fast without it.

Here's a great post from the Veritus Group blog showing some of what that means, at It's About Leadership

  1. Devote half of your time to donors
  2. Bring finance, program and development together to create inspiring offers ... and you stick with it when it gets hard.
  3. Demand that programs develop measurable outcomes
  4. Seek counsel from donors
  5. Lead on creating a culture of philanthropy
  6. Embrace return on investment and the need for overhead
  7. Balance short-term gains with long-term vision
  8. Ask donors personally for transformational gifts
  9. Get emotional about the need

As they usually do, my friends at the Veritus Group are talking about success with major donor fundraising.

And, as usual, I'm saying, That's not just about major donor work, but all fundraising.

Because fundraising is fundraising. The details of how it plays out for different areas are different -- whether we're talking about digital, major donors, planned giving, or anything else.

But at the foundation, it's all the same. Fundraising is fundraising.
