This June, the NSPCC is raising money through The Big Breaktime, while other new fundraising events include the Hendy Foundation Bike Ride and the GOSH Charity Play Date. Here’s news of these, and other recent and upcoming events.

NSPCC encourages an extra play break with The Big Breaktime

The NSPCC is calling on nurseries and schools across the UK to down tools for The Big Breaktime next month and raise money to support its work with children. On Childhood Day, the charity’s flagship day of fundraising on Friday 10 June, children and adults are encouraged to have a big break from the school day to focus on playing and having fun. Schools are being asked to have an extra hour of play, at a time of day that best suits them and to encourage pupils, staff and parents to give a small, suggested donation.


Ninth outing for Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice Mini London Marathon

The Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice’s Mini London Marathon took place on 8 May, giving running heroes the opportunity to get active and have fun with friends or siblings on a 2.62-mile route. This was the Mini Marathon’s ninth year. The event is open to children aged 5 to 16 and of all abilities, who can walk, run, race or jog the route, with younger children accompanied by an adult. All sponsorship raised from the event will go towards the funding and provision of care for palliative patients and their families in the boroughs of Royal Greenwich and Bexley.

First Hendy Foundation Bike Ride to take place in July

Olympic cycling champion Dani Rowe is supporting a new event at Thruxton in Hampshire this year with the launch of the Hendy Foundation Bike Ride. The Hendy Foundation Bike Ride on Saturday 23 July will offer a morning session for serious cyclists to ride a 2.4 mile track, with the afternoon devoted to those looking for a more leisurely ride with family and friends. There will be activities off the bikes to keep everyone occupied and completion certificates for under 16s. Entry fees are £15 per person with under 16s free of charge. All proceeds from the cycling will be donated to Hendy Foundation which supports charities across the south coast.


Emma Barton fronts Dementia UK’s Time for a Cuppa

From the 1– 8 May, Dementia UK is running its annual Time for a Cuppa – a chance for friends, family and colleagues to get together and enjoy a slice of cake and cup of tea for specialist dementia support. The event is being fronted by actress Emma Barton who became a celebrity supporter for Dementia UK last year. With her uncle diagnosed with vascular dementia, she has experienced first-hand how a diagnosis of dementia can impact the family. The charity’s annual fundraising event has raised over £1,188,000 in the past 12 years since its launch. Just before the pandemic, Barton took part in the charity’s Time for a Cuppa campaign recreating famous ‘celebri-tea’ movie moments where she appeared as Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s.


City Hospice’s Wag this Way raises over £8,000

The return of Cardiff charity City Hospice’s Wag this Way event raised over £8,000 to support its work in the local area. Sponsored by Wessex Garages, the five-kilometre dog walk had hundreds of owners and dogs alike taking part, walking through Bute Park on a sunny Sunday morning in mid-March, before visiting stalls offering treats and accessories and watching Dog Furiendly’s Dog Show. Over 200 people registered before the event, with more choosing to join in on the day.

First GOSH Charity Play Date to take place in July

This July, GOSH Charity will challenge children, family and friends of all ages to come together in the name of fun to raise money to support GOSH’s dedicated Play team. GOSH Charity Play Date is a new fundraising initiative in which participants will host a Play Date at home, in a garden, at school, at nursery or a local club on a day of their choosing during the month of July. Guests will be asked to make a small donation to their hosts before joining in with the fun. Everyone who signs up to host a Play Date will receive a fundraising pack complete with stickers and print-at-home bunting, posters and invitations. Also in the pack will be a DIY collection box and a QR code to direct guests to the host’s bespoke fundraising page. And for those looking for inspiration, game ideas will also be available on the GOSH Charity Play Date website.  


Record amount raised by London’s Air Ambulance Charity Gala

London’s Air Ambulance Charity’s recent Gala raised a record £944,000 – the equivalent of over 400 potentially life-saving missions. The Gala was attended by the Charity’s Patron, His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge. The Duke met with some of the medical and operational crew to thank them for their service, as well as meeting an inspirational patient of the service, Bruno, whose life was saved by the London’s Air Ambulance team when he was 11. The Duke also delivered a speech in support of the charity and its appeal for two new helicopters.


World’s Biggest Pub Quiz chooses new KwizzBit 2.0 platform

KwizzBit 2.0, which allows users to build host and play quizzes from anywhere in the world, has officially launched. Featuring a quiz builder, live streaming, the ability to play with over 100,000 players in a single game along with more features and a free version, Kwizzbit has also been chosen as the official interactive solution for the upcoming World’s Biggest Pub Quiz which raises funds for Shelter. Pubs are encouraged to run the Quiz between 9-15 May, although there is flexibility to host it at any time during the month, or over the long weekend in June celebrating the Platinum Jubilee. The Quiz is free for pubs to run.

UNICEF UK launches 2022 Soccer Aid Schools Challenge

UNICEF UK is calling on UK schools to take part in Soccer Aid Schools Challenge to help raise funds for children around the world. The School’s Challenge is a fun fundraising event, open to all children regardless of ability, and can take place at any time before the end of June. Schools team up with pupils to design an obstacle course to take on together raising money. Pupils can then bring in £1 to take part, get parents to sponsor them or hold a bake sale to help reach their fundraising target.
