Most fundraising problems and challenges are imposed by fundraisers on themselves in the form of myths and attitudes that separate them from reality.

Here are 5 Myths that Make Asking for Money Hard from Get Fully Funded:

  1. Everyone will give to us. Not so. Every cause is a niche cause. Don't waste your time and money trying to reach "everyone." Know your audience and focus on it.
  2. The mission speaks for itself. It doesn't. It's up to you to make it compelling. Unless you make it interesting it's boring!
  3. Just tell a story and they'll give. Stories are good, but giving the donor action to take is better. (And both together are best of all!)
  4. When there's a need, people will give. You really need to stay in front of donors consistently. Have a schedule and work it.
  5. If people have money, they should give. Since when are you their morality coach? What people "should" do is not your call!
