Just two weeks after undergoing a successful kidney transplant at Beaumont Hospital, 19-year-old Tralee man Darren Burns is recovering well at home - joined, of course, by his dad Mike who selflessly donated his kidney to save his son's life.
While joking that his father was 'moaning a bit' after the initial procedure, Darren says that he will be forever grateful to him for giving him his life back - a life that up to two weeks ago involved four half-hourly session of dialysis every day, coupled with regular bouts of extreme tiredness.
Darren was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease when he was just nine-years-old but his condition began to deteriorate over the past two years.
Four months ago doctors declared that a kidney transplant would be required to save his life. Continue reading
