Last Thursday, Mary Jo Collins thought she was simply going to volunteer at a golf tournament in Graham, an event held to raise money for Republican political candidates.

“I was told to just show up and meet and greet,” she said.

And she did. But she also was presented with one of North Carolina’s highest honors, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, by state Rep. Dennis Riddell and other politicos.

“I was astounded,” she said.

The award goes to North Carolina residents who have made outstanding contributions that go above and beyond the call of duty. Collins is notable for for her work promoting organ donation awareness. Continue reading
