Thanking your donors matters. Always.

And thanking them well matters just as much as asking them well. Maybe more so.

Here's some great help with effective thanking from the Bloomerang Blog, at Donor Thank You Down and Dirty:

  1. Be Personal. Write like a human connecting with other humans you know and like. Don't write like an institution.
  2. Be Creative. Think of beautiful and interesting new ways to say and show your gratitude.
  3. Be Authentic. It's more important to be real than to be "perfect." Remember, gratitude is fundamentally a human connection, not a marketing transaction.
  4. Be Frequent. Thank them every time they give. Thank them between gifts. Thank them on special days (like their birthdays). Thanking gets more powerful as you repeat it.

I have one item to add to this amazing list:

  • Be quick. Get your donation acknowledgements out the door within 24 hours of receiving the gift!
