The Charity Retail Association has launched its annual campaign to encourage shoppers to purchase from charity shops this Christmas.
Through #GoodCauseSantaClaus, it is calling on the public to pledge to buy presents from charity shops and to help it spread the word about the wonders of preloved.
It suggests that the public take part in these ways:
- Buy second-hand gifts from charity shops
- Use its charity shop gift insert to let the recipient know that the gift is supporting a good cause and the environment
- Share its #GoodCauseSantaClause social media content: square / rectangle
- Use the hashtag #GoodCauseSantaClaus
Charity shops and online charity retailers can take part and encourage shoppers to participate by:
- Sharing its social media content on their platforms (as above)
- Displaying a poster: A4 portrait / A4 landscape
- Using the hashtag #GoodCauseSantaClaus to highlight items on sale that would be ideal Christmas gifts on social media
Last year, pandemic restrictions announced in December saw non-essential shops, including charity shops, forced to close just before Christmas. Oxfam for one saw high street sales down 50% on the previous year although online retail did well with the charity reporting an increase in online sales of almost 90% on 2019 during the festive period.
Lockdowns have seen more charities turn to selling online with Charity Retail Association figures showing that the average UK charity shop lost over £33,000 in income during the third lockdown, while the Shopiago platform, which works with charities, reported a 151% increase in items sold between February and July this year.
