From Toolstation teaming up with Pennies to raise more money for its charity partner Macmillan to Phoenix Group extending its partnership with Samaritans for another year, and YOTEL London City’s donation of working space to Solace Women’s Aid, here’s news of how 12 businesses are currently supporting good causes around the UK.

Macmillan & Toolstation

Toolstation has partnered with micro-donation charity Pennies to enable its customers to add an optional donation onto their purchases when paying by card and contactless. Following a successful trial across Toolstation London branches, Pennies was rolled out to its estate of over 500 stores nationwide at the beginning of March. Having raised more than £500,000 for Macmillan in 2021 Toolstation expects to far surpass this amount with its fundraising in 2022, with Pennies’ micro-donations to be included in this total. Alongside the partnership launch with Pennies, Toolstation has also launched a limited edition Stanley knife which will see £1 from every sale donated to Macmillan Cancer Support. The bright green knife – the colour of Macmillan – is on sale from April to June in stores and online for £5.99.

British Red Cross, UNICEF & BBX

Members of BBX, a community that allows businesses to trade services without using cash, have donated the equivalent of over £50,000 to support victims of the war in Ukraine, providing advertising space for the British Red Cross and UNICEF to promote their fundraising campaigns for the Ukraine more widely.  After realising many of its members wanted to support Ukraine but weren’t sure how to, BBX created a media fund for charities working on the ground, which members can donate their digital credits to. The fund then buys advertising space for these charities to help to promote their fundraising efforts and encourage donations from the public.

Solace Women’s Aid & YOTEL London City

YOTEL London City is giving local charity Solace Women’s Aid free working space for six months in the city-centre hotel, following a social media campaign for local charities and nonprofits to be nominated by the local community. YOTEL London City is giving Solace Women’s Aid its flexible meeting rooms for one full day per month over the next six months for the charity to use however it wishes in its Clerkenwell location. YOTEL has also offered the charity a complimentary overnight stay for two in the hotel for the charity. Solace has chosen to use the overnight stay as part of its first Solace-led fundraising event since the pandemic, due to take place later this year.

Cancer Research UK & Bellway

Cancer Research UK’s Bristol superstore has received a donation of six double beds from Bellway. The housebuilder, whose South West regional office is located in Almondsbury, delivered the items to the charity’s superstore on Brislington Retail Park. The beds, which had been displayed in Bellway showhomes across the region, will be sold to raise money for the organisation’s ongoing research into cancer treatments. Bellway has raised £2 million for Cancer Research UK since making the organisation its nominated national charity in 2016. The partnership is aiming to raise £3 million in total by 2023 through a variety of fundraising activities from dress down days to golf days and other sports events led by employees.

CHAS & Thorntons law firm

Scottish law firm Thorntons is supporting Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) by becoming the headline sponsor of the charity’s fifth Rocking Horse Ball. The event takes place on 17 June in Edinburgh, and will be hosted by Scottish comedian and broadcaster Fred MacAulay. The last Rocking Horse Ball took place in 2019 and raised £136,000 for the charity.

Samaritans & Phoenix Group

Phoenix Group is extending its charity partnership with Samaritans for a further year. Since the partnership launched in April 2021, Phoenix Group has donated more than £340,000 to the charity. Phoenix Group colleagues have undertaken a variety of activities to fundraise for Samaritans and promote its work across the UK over the last 12 months, including a sponsored virtual walk of almost 300 miles equivalent to the distance between Phoenix Group’s Edinburgh and Wythall offices, as well as taking part in the ‘Santa in the City’ run in London in December. As well as supporting the charity financially, Phoenix Group colleagues have attended workplace training courses delivered by Samaritans’ experts, as well as awareness raising sessions.

Chasing the Stigma & Admiral Taverns

Community pub company Admiral Taverns has announced its new charity partner for 2022: Chasing the Stigma. During 2022, Admiral’s target is to raise as much money as possible for the mental health charity through a range of fundraising events, from office activity to pub charity events.

Digital Poverty Alliance, Barclays & Intel

The Digital Poverty Alliance, alongside Barclays and Intel, has started to roll out its second stage of Tech4Teachers, a new project which provides laptops to teachers to improve the quality of teaching at schools across the UK. This stage of the campaign has started to connect teachers who lack adequate online access with 550 new devices, to enable them to better support over 20,000 school children in the most disadvantaged communities. Funding for the programme will be provided by flagship sponsors Barclays and Intel. This second stage builds upon the first phase of the Tech4Teachers programme in 2021, which saw Currys provide 1,000 laptops for teachers across the UK.

Trussell Trust & The Post Office

Working in partnership with anti-poverty charity Trussell Trust, The Post Office has donated over £295,956 to help the 1,300 food banks across the UK supported by the charity. Across a four-month campaign which started on 29 November 2021 and ended 31 March 2022, Post Office donated 1p for every cash withdrawal made in any of its 11,500 branches to the Trussell Trust, with a target to reach £250,000 by the end of March. This has been overachieved by 18%. Last year, food banks in the Trussell Trust’s network provided over 2.5m emergency food parcels to people facing hunger, with nearly a million of these for children.

Marie Keating Foundation, Leukaemia Care, Air Ambulance Northern Ireland & Dalata Hotel Group

Dalata Hotel Group will be supporting the Marie Keating Foundation, Leukaemia Care and Air Ambulance Northern Ireland as its three charity partners over the next three years. The partnerships are part of the group’s Dalata Digs Deep initiative which sees fundraising activities taking place at all 47 of the company’s hotels across Ireland, the UK and continental Europe. The three charities were selected by Dalata’s dedicated Charity Committee who looked at specific charities focused on improving lives, with each charity representing a different geographical region (Republic of Ireland, Great Britain and Northern Ireland). Dalata Hotel Group, which operates Clayton and Maldron Hotels, raised €1.5 million for its previous charity partners through employee fundraising and matching corporate donations.
