The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) is offering a further £5 million to help tackle the illegal wildlife trade as it invites funding applications to round two of its Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge.

The fund will donate £13 over four years (2014-2018) to help existing, practical projects that:

• develop sustainable livelihoods for communities affected by illegal wildlife trade

• strengthen law enforcement and the role of the criminal justice system

• reduce demand for the products of the illegal wildlife trade

The first round of the Challenge Fund distributed £5 million to 19 projects. It certainly faces a huge problem. The illegal wildlife trade is estimated to be worth £6 billion each year, threatening both widlife and people.

Applications to the Illegal Wildlife Trade Challenge Fund are open until midnight on Monday 12 October 2015.
