Meagan Rickman's legacy lives on through tissue

A Jacksonville teen who lost her life while waiting for her third heart transplant went on to become a tissue donor – and will soon be honored for her gift at the Rose Bowl Parade.

Seventeen-year-old Meagan Rickman was born with a rare heart defect, but never let her medical problems define her.

Holly Nix said her daughter was overwhelmingly positive with an infectious attitude.

After two successful heart transplants – the first when she was just 9 weeks old – saved her life, Meagan told her mother that she wanted to help others in need.

She had made it very clear that she wanted to make sure that we were able to help other people if something happened to her,” Nix said.

That time came in 2013, after Meagan died while surgeons were placing a pacemaker.

Nix fulfilled her wish and Meagan became a tissue donor. Continue reading
