GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — The gift of life was being celebrated at CHI Health St. Francis Monday.
The hospital held an organ donor remembrance ceremony, honoring anyone who has generously and courageously given an organ.
The program included a candle-lighting ceremony and touching stories from families who have seen firsthand how a donation can make the difference.
"I wrote the poem yesterday because I needed to experience something deeper than just my story, and I wrote it as a thank you to all those donor families out there because they're the real heroes in this story," said Sue Beaty, who is an organ recipient.
CHI Health St. Francis says more than 114,000 Americans are currently waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, and nearly 500 of those people are Nebraska residents. Continue reading
