Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville on Thursday morning held a ceremony to honor organ donors and organ recipients in the hospital’s Tree of Life Courtyard.
Hospital spokeswoman Mariana Tulminson said an oak tree was planted in courtyard in 2004 as a way to honor the precious gift of life that comes with organ donation.
Azalea Quiroz told the crowd that when she lost her 22-month-old daughter, Abigail, suddenly 11 years ago in a car accident, she knew she wanted her daughter’s death to serve a greater purpose.
“Even though I would go through a loss maybe someone else would be able to gain something else out of it and save their child,” Quiroz said.
Quiroz said she received a certificate from the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance that stated her daughter’s donation had saved the lives of two other children. Continue reading
