Years after children's death, father stresses the importance of organ donation

ANAMOSA, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) - As part of Donate Life month, an event Friday afternoon in Anamosa aimed to change and save lives. The Jones Regional Medical Center and the Iowa Donor Network worked to raise awareness of the need for organ donation.

Troy DeJoode shared his story of how organ donation impacted his life on Friday. In 2010, a car crash killed two of his three children in Ankeny. His son Carson, 5, and 5-month-old daughter, Claire, both died.

Shortly after their deaths, DeJoode agreed to donate their organs. Combined, the two children saved lives of nine people. Doctors were able to give Carson's liver to 5 month old boy, his kidneys to two people on dialysis and his heart valves to two children. Claire's heart saved a 3-month-old boy who was in end-stage heart failure. Continue reading VIDEO
