What does it take to be a very god fundraiser?

Well, lots of knowledge and experience.

But I think you'll agree that isn't enough. Not even close. Because a great fundraiser is a deep, thoughtful, and connected human being. That's why I loved this post at Good Works: How to be a good fundraiser. It's not about the tactics and techniques of fundraising, but the ways of thinking and being that matter:

  • Have purpose. Don't let your fundraising be just a bunch of techniques. Care! Be devoted to the causes. Really avoid situations where you're fundraising for causes you don't believe in!
  • Practice grace. Everyone makes mistakes. Give others the grace you'd want for yourself.
  • Smile, be happy. Seek reasons to feel good. It works.
  • Make gratitude part of every day. It's easy to get annoyed with donors and the many things that make fundraising hard. Instead, focus on how wonderful it really is, and how privileged you are to be working to make the world better.
  • Be positive. Don't let rough experiences, mean people, or bad luck color the way you see the world. If you do, it will become true!
  • Learn, share, teach. You get back what you give. It's really worthwhile to share with others.
  • Respect everyone, always. Don't think of anyone as a pawn. Whether it's a client, a vendor, or a donor. They all matter, and how you treat each one matters.
