If your organization is experiencing a "Trump Bump" -- higher-than-normal giving from donors motivated to work against the policies and goals of President Trump -- here's the most important thing you need to know:
The Trump Bump will end. Things will change, and those on-fire, highly motivated donors will cool down, even get complacent. Giving will drop.
It always happens. And it happens to both sides of the political spectrum. Nonprofits working on the "right" are suffering a slump these days, as their donors are feeling calm and complacent.
It's kind of like watching a hurricane come. Except it's months or years from hitting you.
That's why I urge you to read this post at The Agitator: Take Action Before The Trump Bump Slumps. Even if you are completely apolitical and not affected by who's in office, you are subject bumps and slumps, and these things can save your bacon:
- Concentrate on the Most Committed Donors. You are going to lose donors when the Bump ends. Put your energy toward keeping those who do the most. Multi-gift donors, high-dollar donors, and those who show the highest loyalty and engagement.
- Understand and Use Donor Identity. Learn everything you can about your "Bump" donors. They may be different from your typical donors. Be ready to connect with them differently.
- Show Impact. As your Bump donors cool down, warm them up by showing them their giving still matters a lot!
- Say Thank You -- Again and Again. Thanking donors is the best way to inoculate against attrition. Don't pinch pennies in this critical area.
The coming slump won't be easy. But if you prepare, it doesn't need to be a disaster. And if you're not part of the Bump, do these things anyway! It's how you should treat your donors and run a solid fundraising program!
