British Heart Foundation and Oxfam are both promoting sustainable shopping habits this month. BHF and its celebrity supporters are challenging people to take part in its Reuse Revolution challenge, while Oxfam has teamed up with British designer Matilda Goad to promote its pre-loved homewares.
Celebrities support BHF’s Reuse Revolution
Dame Helen Mirren, former Vogue Editor-in-Chief Alexandra Shulman and DJ Gilles Peterson (above) are among the celebrities taking on BHF’s Reuse Revolution challenge and donating preloved items this May, along with fashion model Olivia Arben, TV presenter Gemma Atkinson and Dr Hazel Wallace.
Dame Helen Mirren, who is leading a star-studded cast for a theatrical TV show marking the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, donated a silk blouse, a signed pair of white high heels and a signed CD of the music recorded to celebrate the Jubilee. The shoes originally belonged to Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders.
The items are all listed on the charity’s eBay store, alongside pieces from former Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue, Alexandra Shulman and model Olivia Arben. Bids are for Alexandra Shulman’s navy-blue polka dot Samantha Sung dress and Olivia Arben’s Maje dress and two Ralph Lauren dresses.
Preloved items donated by the celebrities have also been left in BHF charity shops across the country, so as well as bidding for celebrity items online, shoppers can also visit their local BHF shop to hunt down a signed copy of Gemma Atkinson’s book, a signed book and records from DJ Gilles Peterson, Olivia Arben’s hat and clothes, shoes and books from The Food Medic, Dr Hazel Wallace.
Reuse Revolution aims to raise awareness of the benefits of shopping and donating via BHF’s 700 nationwide shops and online eBay and Depop stores – preventing good quality items from going to landfill and saving money while also funding its heart research.
Allison Swaine-Hughes, Retail Director at the BHF, said:
“What an incredible way to kickstart our Reuse Revolution with the support of so many celebrities donating their preloved items. Our savvy shoppers can support the revolution by shopping online via our eBay shop, bidding on some fabulous shoes from Helen Mirren, or searching for a bargain in their local BHF shops. You might just find a signed record or book from one of these famous names.”
Designer helps Oxfam promote preloved homewares
Oxfam has teamed up with designer Matilda Goad (above) to encourage people to take a look at its preloved homewares this Spring and take a different approach to their interior design.
Showing how to transform living spaces and buck passing trends with finds from Oxfam, Goad visited its superstore in Oxford and browsed its online Shop, sourcing tableware, vintage Lucite candlesticks, a rattan kidney sofa, and monochrome gingham fabric which she transformed into a cushion cover. Oxfam is sharing her tips on social media and on its site.
Goad said:
“For as long as I can remember, I have always loved the thrill of seeking out unique second-hand pieces. I found so many interesting items at Oxfam that I will cherish for a very long-time to come. Shopping second-hand homewares at Oxfam extends the life of items, which is important, and I like knowing I have contributed to the circular economy and helped to raise money for Oxfam’s lifesaving and life-changing work.”
Lorna Fallon, Director of Retail at Oxfam, said:
“Shopping second-hand homewares at Oxfam extends the life of items, which is better for the planet reducing waste and the emissions that contribute to the climate emergency. Not only that, but whenever you buy something from Oxfam, you’re raising funds to help some of the world’s poorest people.”
