KNOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - There's no greater gift a parent can give a child than the gift of life.

"Really there's no way to put it into words how it makes you feel being able to be an instrument to save your child's life," Elmer Portwood said.

Elmer and Melanie Portwood adopted their son Breven from Guatemala when he was just six months old. When Breven turned nine, he was diagnosed with renal dysplasia and stage three chronic kidney disease. The doctors said he needed a kidney transplant. To everyone's surprise, Elmer was the "perfect match."

"It's crazy all that we've been through the past three years," Elmer Portwood said. "But, it's finally come full circle here in the last few days."

On Aug. 20, Breven got the transplant he needed. Both he and Elmer went into surgery at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. The procedures went well. Elmer Portwood said he's already noticing some changes in his son. Continue reading
