MONTAGUE — Every time the phone rings, Ryan Interlande thinks, “This could be it,” and he’s ready with a packed bag in his car.
Unfortunately, the news on the other end of the phone hasn’t yet been what he’s been waiting to hear, but the 39-year-old Montague native, who spent more than 20 years as a disc jockey bringing fun and music to local parties and events, is hopeful that one day soon it will be his surgeon telling him they’ve found a heart, because he needs a heart transplant.
Interlande said the only thing keeping him alive at this point is a left ventricle assist device, known as an LVAD, which doctors at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston attached to his heart in January.
The pump, which is about the size of a salt shaker, helps his severely damaged heart pump oxygenated blood through his entire body, he said. Unlike an artificial heart, the pump is there to help, not replace, his heart. Continue reading
