Fundraising is just weird right now. Organizations that connected with donors early in the pandemic had record-breaking results.

Others shut down and are going broke.

Now we seem to be transitioning to a new phase. Results are mixed -- some fundraisers are still breaking records, while others are seeing results drop.

It might get worse. Or not. And it will likely be different for different sectors and in different places.

Whatever happens, here are some things you can do, from the Bloomerang Blog, at Changes in Fundraising Since Quarantine Began:

  1. Define your problem before you seek its solution. Is revenue down? Exactly which revenue, from what sources? Can you do something different that will change the situation?
  2. Proactively connect with supporters. The worst thing you can do right now is go silent. Even in down times, there are donors eager to connect and support you. Don't decide for them that they won't give.
  3. ASK!
  4. Be personal. Your donors are human beings who want to make a difference for other human beings. Don't ask them to support an organization. Ask them to make a difference for people.
  5. Be transparent and authentic. Tell the truth about what's going on with your organization. Be open about how you feel.
  6. Lead with an attitude of gratitude. Donors are amazing. If you think otherwise, fundraising is the wrong business for you! Find something else to do.
