The tragic death of “a wonderful caring person, with a wicked sense of humour” was captured on a Channel 5 documentary last night highlighting the desperate need for organ donors.
The plight of brave Billingham man Aaron Cavanagh, who died while waiting for a lung transplant aged just 33 , featured on the Channel 5 documentary, Gift of Life, last night.
Aaron suffered from cystic fibrosis, a life-limiting lung condition, and spent more than a year on the list for a double lung transplant.
Aaron - also known to many of his friends by his middle name Ronnie or by the nickname ‘Cav’ - travelled five times to the Freeman Hospital, in Newcastle, in the hope of a transplant.
His dream was to have a transplant and then travel to Dublin, where he wanted to propose to his “soul mate”, girlfriend Sam Brooker, 28.
But on five occasions, despite a donor match, complications meant that Aaron couldn’t get the transplant he needed. Continue reading
