Every year, dozens of kidney swaps — or paired exchanges — take place, allowing people in need of kidney transplants and with a loved one willing to donate but not a good match to do an “exchange” with another donor-recipient pair in the same predicament.
Tuwanda Crider, 43, of Lynchburg, needed a kidney transplant, and her sister Artice Appling, 36, of Richmond, wanted to donate to her, but was not a match.
So after a long wait for a deceased donor kidney, and after multiple family members, including Crider’s husband, were tested and ruled out as possible donors, Crider turned to a paired exchange.
Crider and Appling were listed with two of several organizations that coordinate such exchanges — the National Kidney Registry and the United Network for Organ Sharing’s kidney paired donation program — and eventually got the call from Virginia. Continue reading
