The Board of Rabbis of Greater Phoenix issued a statement last week in support of organ donation in both living and post-life situations.

“We encourage each member of the Jewish community of Greater Phoenix to consider registering as an organ donor and make their wishes known with the state, in their will and with family members,” read the statement.

“Many of us, although not all, have the unique opportunity to save lives even after we have passed from this world. There are few opportunities more holy and precious.

Jewish law and ethics compel us to give the gift of life.”

“The urge to save lives (pikuach nefesh) is a fundamental value in Judaism,” said Rabbi Jeremy Schneider, president of the Board of Rabbis, in the statement. “In fact, Jewish law demands that one should violate almost all other commandments to save a life.” Continue reading
