County Clerk Chris Jacobs recently sent a letter Governor Cuomo, urging him to sign legislation that closes a loophole in Lauren’s Law by amending the law to ensure that when people apply for a New York State Driver’s License, they must complete the section of the application relating to organ donation.
This legislation passed overwhelmingly in both the Senate and Assembly in June of this year. “I believe that this amendment to Lauren’s Law is a significant step toward achieving the initial goal of the law, which is to have New York State become a leader in organ donation by dramatically providing individuals with the opportunity to enroll in the Donate Life Registry, thereby increasing the number of registrants,” Jacobs said. “The legislation received wide support in both houses, and I urge Governor Cuomo to sign this into law.”
Lauren’s Law, named for heart transplant survivor Lauren Shields, was signed into law in October 2012. Upon implementation, it became clear to Jacobs that because of an “operational glitch” with the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, the system did not mandate that the question on organ donation be answered.
