Stories are not magic!

Just telling a story doesn't unlock donor generosity. It has to be the right story, and told in the right way.

When you tell a story in your fundraising, here are three questions to ask yourself about it:

  1. Does it demonstrate a problem the donor can solve? No matter how dramatic or interesting the story, if it doesn't directly connect your donor to the problem their giving can solve, it's not helpful.
  2. Is it easy to understand without special knowledge? The story needs to be easy to grasp by your non-expert donors.
  3. Can the donor can be in the story? You must be able to make the donor part of the story -- most likely as someone who can solve the problem.

These questions will help you choose the right story and tell it in the right way so that it supports your fundraising.
