The coronavirus is a dangerous enemy.

But there's something worse, much more likely to do deep and lasting harm to your organization...

Fear.

Fear will push you into bad decisions of all kinds. But clarity, courage, and confidence will help you through this time stronger than ever -- as you'll see in this great post from the Bloomerang Blog at Crisis of Confidence: Your Nonprofit's Worst Fundraising Enemy:

  1. Don't act as if it's business as usual. We're in a completely unusual time. The crisis touches everything -- even things you might logically think are not impacted by it. Acknowledge the state we're in. Ask donors how they're doing. Be human about it!
  2. Don't act as if the sky is falling. We will get through this. Remind yourself and your donors!
  3. Don't assume on behalf of your supporters. We hear all kinds of wild stories about donors -- like they're terrified of touching their postal mail, or stewing angrily at home, ready to pounce on anyone who gets in touch with them. Those are made-up stories. Don't decide what donors are doing. That's their territory, not yours. And evidence is clear, donors are more responsive than usual right now!
  4. Keep your message super simple. Short, simple fundraising messages are working right now. This is one of those rare times when a short fundraising message can do very well.
  5. Develop campaigns to take advantage of current favorite mediums. Use the channels you normally use. Those will work best.
  6. Be bold with asking. Be clear. Be obvious. Come right out and ask! That's what works best. Always.
