Keena Frost got the bad news on the day after Christmas, as she lay in a hospital bed.

Her kidneys were failing, doctors said, and she would need to begin dialysis. She also was advised to put her name on the list for an expected long wait for a kidney transplant.

That was 2011.

But one night this past January, just 15 minutes before midnight, Frost received decidedly better news. After three years of dialysis — and three years on the national waiting list for a new kidney — she heard she could be getting an organ from a recently deceased young adult. The next day, after tests confirmed the kidney was a match for her, Frost received a transplant at Methodist University Hospital.
