The Philadelphia-based Gift of Life Donor Program broke its own national record last year when it successfully coordinated organ donations from 483 local organ donors — resulting in 1,291 transplants.

That mark topped its previous national record of 447 organ donors, which Gift of Life reached in 2013 and tied in 2014.

The nonprofit noted it coordinated an additional 352 organ transplants involving donors from other areas of the country, bringing the total number of organ donations coordinated by Gift of Life to 1,643. That represents the largest number of organ donations coordinated by an organ procurement organization in the United States.

“Being the national leader in giving is a great accomplishment,” said Howard N. Nathan, the president and CEO of Gift of Life. “We are grateful for the generosity of donors and donor families who chose donation, along with the expertise and dedication of the region’s health care professionals and our strong partnerships with the 15 transplant centers and 129 acute care hospitals in our area.
