Hours after a plea to the community to think about donating a kidney to his son, Garland Root got good news Wednesday.

A kidney match had been found from a recently deceased organ donor that would help 10-year-old Marcus Root in his fight against cystinosis. Marcus was down to five percent kidney function.

"I just got a call just now from Denver Children's Hospital, and they have a donor for him," Root said in a Wednesday night voicemail to the Daily Record. "And so he and I are going to head up (Wednesday), and he's going to be receiving his new kidney (Thursday)."

After the surgery, via text message to a Daily Record reporter, Garland Root said, "They're closing him up, surgery went well. The doctor is on his way to talk to me. ... Praise God." Continue reading
