SAN ANTONIO, MARFA – “I promise to take good care of your kidney,” read a note received by Marfa resident Allison Scott two days after she underwent a two-hour surgery at University Hospital in San Antonio as an altruistic kidney donor.
The author of the letter is thus far unknown to Scott, who serves as the Fort Davis Dirks-Anderson Elementary School principal.
“The doctors told me the [donated] kidney is performing wonderfully and working well,” said Scott, who also explained that the recipient will be required to follow up with doctors for the next year, while Scott herself only needs one follow-up in six months.
For Scott, the post-surgery days were much easier than she expected, improving quickly following the operation.
“Recovery was amazing,” she explained. “There was no pain to speak of. The hospital is great at pain management. I was surprised at how well I bounced back!” Continue reading
