I'm really hoping that the stress the coronavirus pandemic has put us under helps spark a widespread movement of back-to-basics fundraising.

If it does, we will come out of this faster and better. And live in a brighter, better-funded future.

Here are some of those things you should consider now, from the Candid Blog, at Back to the basics: rethinking your fundraising strategy:

  1. Transition to virtual fundraising strategies. With fundraising events off the table, find different ways to raise money. Whether that's virtual events, or transitioning to more effective forms of fundraising entirely. (You may discover that those big events weren't so effective after all!)
  2. Accept multiple forms of payment. Make it easy for everyone to give. Accept debit/credit cards, take EFT payment, even consider things like PayPal and Apple Pay. Many donors are moving in that direction.
  3. Stay up to date with current events. Shorten your production cycles to avoid messaging that gets terribly outdated by fast-moving events.
  4. Seek relevant grant funding. Many foundations are offering grants for crisis relief. There might be something for you.
  5. Personalize your donor outreach. Remember that fundraising isn't just a transaction -- it's a relationship. Make sure you build a meaningful one that treats them as real people you care about.
