These are tough and scary times for many nonprofits.

But not for all of them. Many are doing just fine. Some are doing great, even better than they've ever done.

How can you make sure you are in the doing great category? Do these things:

  1. Have an urgent message. Is the need for your services up? Is revenue down? Both? That's your fundraising message. And it's a winner.
  2. Be relevant. Don't believe what you might have heard about "COVID-19 fatigue." Sure they're tired of hearing about it. But it's a huge part of their life too. Pretending it's not happening just makes your fundraising
  3. Believe in your donors. They want to help! They love it when you give them the opportunity to make a difference -- more than ever in hard times.
  4. Get professional help. You don't know it all. One of the best investments is help with your strategy and messaging.
  5. Learn and connect. Find and participate in a community of like-minded fundraisers. The power you get from sharing and mutual support is astounding. There are a lot of quality online communities. In my opinioin, the best one around is The Fundraisingology Lab by Moceanic.

You can think and talk and act like a victim of the crisis -- but that's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

These aren't normal times. Don't act like they are. But don't curl up and play possum. Keep raising funds with passion, focus, and an eye on your donors. That's the key to success in hard times. In any times.
