John Bell held his heart close to his chest, where it once lived about two years ago.

The formaldehyde to preserve it had turned it a pale yellow.

Beside him stood three more transplant patients — their hands in blue gloves — holding their old hearts Friday at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.

It’s part of the hospital’s Heart-to-Heart program. The idea is to promote lifestyle changes after surgery. For those with a hereditary heart disease, it shows them what they’d fought against for years.
