Speaking before Gov. Dennis Daugaard passed out medals of recognition for South Dakota families, Pierre resident Tim Bjork put it simply.
“Without you and your families and your loved ones, I don’t exist.”
This wasn’t an exaggeration. He had a heart transplant in 2006. In the audience were about 40 family members of people who had lost someone close — but who gave their organs so that others might live.
Bjork is the president of LifeSource, which coordinates organ donations. The recognition luncheon Tuesday honored the memory of the people who gave their organs to people like Bjork.
Bjork told his story. At the age of 33, he had a heart attack, and after that had an assist device in his heart. It worked, but his options were limited until a new heart restored his blood circulation to good as new. Continue reading
