GoFundMe is giving Olympic athletes the chance to win $10,000 as they prepare for the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

To qualify, athletes must have already qualified for the Olympics or be participating in an upcoming Olympic trial. The Olympian who raises the most money in a GoFundMe campaign aimed at helping them get to Rio between June 27th and July 15th will win the $10,000 prize.

The competition started on 27th June and runs until 15th July. Athletes currently without a GoFundMe campaign who wish to compete for the $10,000 prize can still create a campaign and raise funds during the length of the campaign.

One UK athlete, 20 year old Katie Gleeson from West Sussex is taking part to fulfil her dream of competing in the Olympics and Commonwealth Game as a rifle shooter. Her GoFundMe page has so far raised over £1,900.

GoFundMe has created a dedicated hub for Olympic hopefuls at: http://ift.tt/2922YgW. According to the page, so far $424,804 has been raised by 97 campaigns from 4,080 donors for athletes on the Road to Rio.

Rob Solomon, GoFundMe CEO said:

“As a former athlete, I’m glad that GoFundMe can join in the spirit of competition and sportsmanship. I want to encourage all members of the GoFundMe giving community to support these athletes as they compete for greatness on the worldwide stage.”
