PITTSBURGH -- An 8-year-old Ellwood City girl whose multiple organ transplant captured the world’s attention last year showed signs of improvement Friday after being taken to a hospital with brain swelling.
Kyree Beachem, was taken Thursday to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, where she received a four-organ transplant in November, after she had become seriously ill. By Friday, however, Kyree’s mother, Nan, said the 8-year-old girl was showing signs of improvement and no longer needed a ventilator to assist with her breathing.
She said Kyree was to have been moved out of intensive care on Friday.
Kyree was diagnosed with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, also called PRES -- a temporary brain swelling that can cause memory loss and, in extreme cases, blindness.
In a Facebook post Thursday, Nan Beachem said Kyree could experience temporary blindness. On Friday, though, she said, Kyree’s vision is fine and she was watching television. Continue reading
