Community Day has been a Fourth of July tradition in Shaler for more than 40 years.
This year's annual celebration will be held July 4 at Kiwanis Park.
“It's a wonderful day for everyone to come together,” said Susan Fisher, township commissioner and parks and recreation committee chairperson. “We try to provide activities for young and old.”
Community Day began humbly many years ago as a way to celebrate the Fourth of July at Kiwanis Park and enjoy some fireworks.
Township newsletters indicate that in the 1970s and ‘80s a special committee oversaw a three-day celebration that included a flea market and craft sale at the junior high school parking lot, a parade with children participating on decorated bicycles and a pet show where children could bring their pets.
Today the celebration is one day, always on the Fourth of July. It kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with the Jane Neely 5K race, which is in its 12th year. Continue reading
