Sometimes the end goal of medical device companies — why they do what they do — can be lost during day-to-day activities. But, Medtronic Spinal is taking steps to remedy that.
The company’s SpinalGraft Technologies group, which stores and distributes medically released human tissue to hospitals and surgery centers, is unveiling a new Donor Garden on Friday, June 3.
Shirley Holliday, a Medtronic employee, said she never thought of organ donation until May 11, 2012. That was the day her son, Eugene Cox III, was shot in the head.
“They asked me about donating his organs and I said 'no' at first,” Holliday said. “After I thought about it, I made the decision [to donate his organs].”
Holliday’s son lived for one more day before being declared brain dead. Her family came to say goodbye to him, and she stayed with him “until he breathed his last breath.” Afterward, his heart, lungs and liver were donated. Holliday said she has received letters and cards from the recipients and their families but hasn’t had a chance to meet them yet. She hopes to do so some day. Continue reading
