As Ruthie Williams, 44, of Desloge, sat and watched the parade go by during Country Days in Farmington last year it hit her, they needed a float to raise awareness for organ donation.
“I went to the parade with my friend and I told her I think we need to do a float for ‘Donate Life’ because organs are so scarce,” said Williams. “Either no one knows about or they think they won’t get the medical (attention) they need if something happens to them. They think if they find out they are an organ donor the doctor will let them go in order to save other people and that is not the case.”
Williams decided they could do a Donate Life float to pass out information, and hopefully get the word out to get people signed up.
“As of May 15 there are a 123,000 people waiting on the list for an organ,” said Williams. “So we have been working for the last few months on putting this together and I am hoping to get the word out.”
Williams is an organ recipient herself. She had a liver transplant last April. She said two weeks before she got her phone call she was in the hospital and they pretty much told her she didn’t have much longer to live. Continue reading
