Chinese University student who underwent a heart transplant two months ago after an urgent appeal for a donor has died from complications.
Ma Cheuk-long, a 20-year-old anthropology sophomore, died at Queen Mary Hospital at around 10pm on Tuesday from multiple-organ failure, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Ma's condition had been critical, with his other organs already in poor condition when he underwent the heart transplant on June 19, Father's Day.
He had been placed on top of the waiting list after suffering terminal heart failure when he contracted myocarditis.
After the 10-hour heart transplant surgery, Ma regained consciousness. But his condition had been fluctuating since then.
"Ma had been in critical condition since he had the transplant. Sometimes his condition improved, but it was still critical," the hospital's chief executive, Luk Chi-chung, said yesterday. Continue reading
