Reunited: Kieran Sandwell and the heart now used to teach medical students A transplant patient who came face to face with his old heart today told of his delight that it was being used to spot others at risk of sudden cardiac death.
Kieran Sandwell returned to the Royal Brompton hospital to learn how the organ had been used since he received a new heart seven years ago.
He had asked for it to be donated to the Brompton, where he had been treated for 20 years, when he received the transplant at Papworth hospital, Cambridge.
Mr Sandwell, 45, a computer analyst from Berkhamsted, said: “I thought I’d be quite calm but when they brought it out I froze. I had goosebumps. It was a very strange experience.
“I was amazed at the size of it. Hearts are normally the size of a fist, but it looked like it was two fists. The right ventricular had severely dilated where the muscle wasn’t working.
“It did bring back a lot of bad memories. I did feel quite sad. It brought back how ill I had been.” Continue reading
