The House of Lords has appointed members of an ad hoc Select Committee on Charities.

The Committee was confirmed on 25th May, and has been appointed “to consider issues related to sustaining the charity sector and the challenges of charity governance”. It is required to report to the House by 31 March 2017, and will publish its call for evidence in due course, stating the specific areas that the committee will investigate.

The Committee is chaired by Baroness Pitkeathley, who is also co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Charities and Volunteeering, and chair of Big Society Trust. She was also previously chief executive of Carers National Association, now Carers UK.

Baroness Pitkeathley is joined by:

  • Lord Foulkes of Cumnock
  • Baroness Gale
  • Lord Rooker
  • Baroness Barker
  • Baroness Scott of Needham Market
  • Lord Chadlington
  • Baroness Jenkin of Kennington
  • Baroness Stedman-Scott
  • Lord Bichard
  • Lord Harries of Pentregarth
  • Lord Lupton

A number of the Lords have charity sector experience, including Baroness Barker, who is the Liberal Democrat Lords Principal Spokesperson for the Voluntary Sector, and previously worked for Age Concern, and Baroness Stedman-Scott, the former CEO of Tomorrow’s People Trust.
