Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have now contributed £1 million over the past five years to a range of British Red Cross projects around the world. Projects supported by People’s Postcode Lottery players include a HIV project, food security and livelihoods project, community resilience project and the Lake Chad crisis. This year, the players are continuing to support a British Red Cross community resilience project in Zimbabwe with an additional £250,000 in funding. The aim of the programme is to help communities anticipate, respond to and recover from disasters and crises, and incorporates food security, livelihoods, nutrition and water and sanitation activities. This support includes drilling boreholes and rehabilitation of water points throughout the selected communities. Funding has also helped train a team of health and hygiene volunteers who visit communities and schools. Mark Astarita, British Red Cross executive director of fundraising said: “We are hugely grateful for the fantastic support received from the players of People’s Postcode Lottery over the past five years. These vital funds will help us work together to secure long term change, supporting vulnerable communities unable to sustain themselves and increase their resilience in the future.”
