Recently Blackbaud UK’s Customer Engagement Director Dan Keyworth spoke at the Global Leaders Summit about Social Fundraising for Educational Institutions. He highlighted three different peer-to-peer fundraising opportunities specifically for higher education institutions.

3 Peer-to-Peer Fundraising Ideas for Higher Ed Institutions:

1. Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is the idea of an individual fundraising for a specific project by asking their friends and family for donations.

This type of fundraising is already happening on your campus today by individuals using a variety of different online tools. The challenge when crowdfunding activities happen on independent platforms is that the development and alumni offices do not have visibility into these donor’s activities for future cultivation and acknowledgement.

Providing your professors, students and alumni groups with access to fundraising tools can help you better manage the wide variety of programs that people are fundraising for in and around your campus.

2. Virtual Events

A Virtual Event asks fundraisers to commit to do a specific activity during a specified period of time. For example, Oxford’s Herford College created the herford360 campaign, where they are asking alumni to cumulatively cycle the equivalent of the equator and fundraising $300K.

With the pervasive use of fitness trackers like FitBit and fitness apps like MapMyFitness and Strava, Hertford College can add up the total miles cycled in addition to tracking fundraising.  Most people don’t live near their college so this type of program can be a great way to engage an alumni base living all over the world.

3. Giving Days

Giving Days are extremely effective because the they create a sense of urgency.  A Giving Day Program asks alumni to make a gift on a specific day or week.  The “Act Today” nature of the program inspires immediate action.  Many Universities/Schools use class agents or alumni with strong social media influence to help seed these campaigns and serve as advocates for the fundraising initiative.
