With Comic Relief and Walkers teaming up to offer mental health and wellbeing grants, here are five snippets of funding news and opportunities.

Comic Relief & Walkers seek applications for mental health & wellbeing Smiles Fund

Comic Relief and Walkers are inviting proposals that use participation in the arts and comedy to challenge stigma and provide community-based support for people experiencing emerging symptoms of poor mental wellbeing in over 18s at an early stage. Through the Smiles Fund they expect to fund 8-12 proposals, with funding available for a minimum of 18 months to a maximum of 30 months, with grants of £100,000-£300,000 available.

The closing date is 11am on Wednesday 15 September.


DL100 Awards: new £5,000 prize for community organisations

This year’s Digital Leaders 100 Awards will feature the Craig Macdonald Memorial Prize, designed to celebrate community organisations involved in addressing the digital divide. Craig was a technology professional dedicated to public service, who passed away suddenly early last year. To honour his memory, tech investor Rob Wilmot is partnering with Digital Leaders to award a prize of £5,000 for the best grassroots organisation working locally to help close the digital divide. Nominations can be made on the site.

UK Power Networks scheme passes £130k mark in donations to grassroots sports teams

Helping future Olympians, a scheme where UK Power Networks staff apply for funding for grassroots sports teams they are involved with has passed the £130,000 mark in donations. The scheme offers UK Power Networks employees who coach or help out in grassroots sport the chance to apply for £250 funding for the club they are involved with. More than 500 grants have now been made, adding up to £130,000 in funding for local sports groups across London, the East and South East of England.


Pilgrim Trust announces £5m in funding to improve young women’s mental health

The Pilgrim Trust has announced £5m in funding over five years to help improve the mental health of young women (16-25) in the UK. The Young Women and Mental Health PLUS fund aims to increase young women’s access to high quality, age and gender specific mental health services. 

The Trust is making available grants of £60,000 to £90,000 spread across three years and grantees will form part of a learning cohort to share best practice. In its first year, which is seen as a pilot, the programme is open to charities working in Greater Manchester and Northern Ireland with an annual income of between £100,000 and £500,000. 


Healthcare Workers’ Foundation opens Memorial Fund to support prospective students

Healthcare Workers’ Foundation (HWF) has launched its Memorial Fund to support young adults who have lost a parent to COVID-19 having worked on the frontlines. The fund will offer a £5,000 grant with the aim of easing the pressure and strain on these prospective students, so they can commence their studies with financial security.

The HWF Memorial Fund is available to anyone entering a higher education or a higher qualification course. Approved applicants can access £5,000 per year and applications can be made directly through the HWF website.
